Held on Saturday 9th July, the MLSC Brown Cup was blessed by another day of fresh south-westerly’s and warm sunshine. The estuary was a crowded place as the Blackwater Smack Race and Barge Match shared the Osea line with us, while a huge fleet of Cats hurtled up and down the river.
The plan to set a long simple course out to sea and avoid the congestion did not entirely succeed, Waratah retiring after a collision with a cruiser and another 25.7, as yet unnamed, attaching herself to the rigging of a barge at Thirslet! The long run out to the Spitway ended with an increasingly shy spinnaker leg across the sluicing ebb. The long thrash in from Wallet No 3 saw Triton and Blue Moon gradually pull clear of the fleet. Triton was first home and Blue Moon first on handicap.
The 25.7’s Sparkler and Dan Dare were 2nd and 3rd.
After a tough 36mile race it must have been devastating for the 3 boats who discovered they had missed the last mark after misreading the course card, but points for honesty and good sportsmanship to Florence, Atom and Easi Rider for immediately identifying themselves and retiring.
And finally, a word of congratulations to Trevor and Ben Holder in Aphrodite, already the smallest boat in the fleet and, after breaking their spinnaker pole, detached from the main fleet, they eventually finished in 7hrs 26mins nearly an hour behind the previous finisher! Their reward, the fine Gozzettt Cup awarded to the first MLSC competitor!
