The MaldonYacht Club’s Cruiser Cup was sailed on Saturday June 11th. The 15 entries that came to the line were greeted by the lightest of south westerly’s which soon subsided to flat calm!
After nearly 2 hours drifting, sometimes backwards in Rocker’s case, a steady breeze filled in from the south. A fast, shy spinnaker reach out to the North Eagle followed, sailed brilliantly by Triton, Diva and Caroline, then around a triangle and back into the estuary.
At St. Peters the southerly switched off and the fleet bunched before a fresh south westerly finally settled in for a fast beat back to Osea.
The overall winner, in a close race, should have been new entry Dan Dare (First 25.7 Alan Hoy BSC) who made the most of the favourable conditions to push out Diva, second, and Bobtail (Sun 2000 Terry Crook BSC) another debutante. However, after the race Dan Dare retired after accepting she had missed out Thirslet Buoy on the way home – life can be very cruel, but full marks for honesty, Alan. Thus Diva was promoted to winner, Bobtail to second and Warratah (First 25.7 Geoff White BSC) to third.
Also new to the fleet were Pat Murphy’s Horizon 27BK Tiger and Andy McIvor’s Hunter Formula 1 Growler. Both performed very creditably on their first outing. The whole fleet was covered by just 30 minutes on corrected time.
Many thanks to David Lawton for presiding over a difficult race most efficiently.
The next BJRC outing, is the Marconi Cup/Stone Cruiser Trophy, over the weekend of June 25th/ 26th and featuring a BBQ after the race on Saturday at the
Marconi SC. I hope to see you there for this always jolly event. You need to
bring your own food unless you are planning to BBQ your crew! With luck BJRC funds will cover your first drink at the bar.
